Driving from sydney to outback Australia Getting to/from the Darling River Run from Sydney and The East Coast

Driving from Sydney to The Darling River Run provides several options to experience and visit NSW by car. Driving to  Outback NSW and doing the Darling River Run can be achieved via the upstream sections of Bourke, Brewarrina and Walgett, the central darling sections around Wilcannia and Broken Hill,  or the lower reaches where the river meets the Mighty Murray River at Wentworth.

The route to/from Sydney also provides a great opportunity to drive The Kidman Way and The Long Paddock.

Sydney to Wentworth:
The Hume Highway & Sturt Highway

Distance: 1,040 km - 12 hours 25 mins (Est)

Taking the Hume Highway south from Sydney through the Southern Highlands, Goulburn, and Gundagai then heading west to Wagga Wagga (Sturt Highway).

The wonderful drive through the NSW Riverina passes through Narrandera, Hay Balranald and Mildura and then continues on the Silver City Highway to Wentworth

Sydney to Wilcannia
The Great Western Highway >Mitchell Highway > Barrier Highway

Distance: 964 km - 12 hours 26 mins (est)

The drive from Sydney to Wilcannia allows the traveller to also visit The Blue Mountains before continuing west through Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, and Nyngan via the Mitchell Highway. From Nyngan, The Barrier Highway heads west the NSW Outback via Cobar and onto Wilcannia. (For those wishing to visit Broken Hill, continue along the Barrier Highway for another 196kms)

Sydney to Bourke:
The Great Western Highway >Mitchell Highway

Distance: 776 km - 10 hours 19 mins (Est)

The drive from Sydney to Bourke allows the traveller to also visit The Blue Mountains before continuing west through Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Nyngan via the Mitchell Highway and on to Bourke.

Sydney to Walgett:
The Great Western Highway >Mitchell Highway > Castlereagh Highway
Distance 689km - 8 hours 37 mins (Est)

The drive from Sydney to Bourke allows the traveller to also visit The Blue Mountains before continuing west through Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo. Joining the Newell Highway as far as Gilgandra, take the Castlereagh Highway through Coonamble and on to Walgett.
